Why Burns Resigned
Over the weekend, State Representative Ty Burns (R-District 35) submitted his resignation letter to Governor Kevin Stitt. His decision comes just days after he pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of domestic abuse and two misdemeanor counts of assault tied to family incidents in November 2024 and April 2025.
Burns had represented his Payne and Noble County district since 2018, focusing much of his legislative work on rural and veteran issues. His resignation leaves an open seat that will likely trigger a special election.
Reaction from Advocates
The YWCA of Oklahoma City issued a statement following Burns’ resignation:
“True accountability is not measured by a title lost or a program completed, but by a sustained change in behavior.”
Advocates stressed that the case is a reminder of the importance of resources for survivors of domestic violence and stronger accountability measures for public officials.
