Deadly Trend in Overdose Deaths
The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics has released alarming new data showing fentanyl is now involved in 90% of opioid-related overdose deaths statewide.
In 2023 alone, fentanyl-related fatalities increased 21% compared to the year prior, underscoring the synthetic drug’s dominance in Oklahoma’s opioid epidemic.
Why Fentanyl Is So Dangerous
Officials warn fentanyl is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and can be deadly in amounts smaller than a grain of sand. Its rise has been fueled by counterfeit pills and laced street drugs.
What Officials Are Saying
“Fentanyl is a poison that continues to devastate Oklahoma families,” one drug enforcement spokesperson said. “We are increasing seizures, arrests, and outreach, but the numbers show how critical this fight has become.”
Public health experts stress the need for expanded naloxone access, better education about counterfeit pills, and broader addiction treatment resources.
