First Navy Vessel to Bear the Name Since Pearl Harbor
Not since the attack on Pearl Harbor more than 80 years ago has the U.S. Navy commissioned a vessel with the name USS Oklahoma. That will change in 2026 with the christening of a new submarine that will officially carry the state’s name back into active duty.
A special committee has been formed to plan a statewide celebration around the event. Chairman Rocky Goins said the group is working to ensure the christening is about more than just ceremony.
“We’re taking this christening a step further, by tying it directly to scholarships for Oklahoma students,” Goins explained.
Scholarships and Community Support
In addition to honoring Oklahoma’s military history, the christening campaign will fund educational scholarships for future generations. Convenience store chain QuikTrip has pledged a $1 million matching grant, helping launch the fundraising effort.
Organizers say the goal is to celebrate the submarine’s service while also creating a long-term legacy that benefits young Oklahomans.
A Historic Oklahoma Moment for the State
The new USS Oklahoma will symbolize resilience and honor the memory of the battleship that was lost during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. For many, the christening marks a historic return of the name to the seas, while also creating new opportunities for the state’s youth.
