Veterans Struggling With Homelessness
According to federal data, 7% of central Oklahoma’s homeless population last year were veterans — many struggling with mental health challenges, substance use, or limited access to health care.
In response, the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System has partnered with community organizations to host the Sooner Stand Down, an event designed to connect homeless veterans with life-changing resources.
What the Event for Veterans Provides
The event, scheduled for next Friday, will offer:
Housing assistance programs to help veterans transition into stable homes
Medical care, including primary, vision, dental, and mental health services
Personal support, from barbers to legal aid
Employment and ID help to aid reintegration into the workforce
More Than Just One Event
Organizers stress that the Sooner Stand Down is more than a one-day outreach. Veterans will be paired with caseworkers and organizations to ensure they have ongoing support.
“This is about giving our veterans not just a bed for a night, but a path to stability,” said an Oklahoma City VA representative.
