These Oklahoma Cities Have Reported The Most UFO Sightings
New data shows Oklahoma UFO sightings have been reported across the state for decades, with Tulsa and Oklahoma City leading Oklahoma in the number of reported unidentified flying objects, now more commonly referred to as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP). The rankings are based on publicly submitted reports compiled by the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) and analyzed by Stacker, providing a fascinating look at where Oklahomans have reported seeing unexplained objects in the sky.
While the reports don't confirm extraterrestrial activity, they do highlight decades of unexplained observations that continue to spark curiosity across the state.
Oklahoma UFO Sightings Are Highest In Tulsa And Oklahoma City
According to the report, Tulsa tops the list with 193 reported sightings, followed by Oklahoma City with 163 reports.
Other Oklahoma communities with notable numbers of reported sightings include:
Norman: 54
Edmond: 54
Broken Arrow: 47
Moore: 38
Lawton: 36
Owasso: 32
Yukon: 28
Muskogee: 23
Combined, Oklahoma has recorded nearly 800 historical UFO reports, making it one of the more active states for reported unexplained aerial sightings over the past several decades.
The rankings are based on witness reports submitted to the National UFO Reporting Center, one of the nation's largest public databases documenting unexplained aerial observations. Additional rankings are available through the Stacker report.
Most Sightings Have Ordinary Explanations
Despite the mystery surrounding many reports, experts caution that a reported sighting does not automatically mean something paranormal or extraterrestrial occurred.
Many reported UFO sightings are eventually identified as commercial aircraft, military flights, drones, satellites, weather balloons, meteor showers, planets, or unusual atmospheric conditions. Others remain classified as "unidentified" simply because investigators don't have enough evidence to determine exactly what the witness observed.
In recent years, government agencies have increasingly adopted the term Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) rather than UFO because it provides a more neutral description of unexplained observations.
Information about reported sightings and historical case files is available through the National UFO Reporting Center.
Oklahoma's UFO History Dates Back Generations
Oklahoma's history of reported Oklahoma UFO sightings stretches back long before today's online reporting databases.
Many of the state's older cases were documented during the U.S. Air Force's Project Blue Book, which investigated thousands of UFO reports nationwide between 1947 and 1969. While the project concluded that most sightings could be explained through conventional means, a small percentage remained unexplained because investigators lacked sufficient evidence to reach a definitive conclusion.
Today, residents continue submitting reports of unusual lights, glowing orbs, triangular aircraft, and unexplained objects moving across Oklahoma skies. Whether those sightings ultimately prove to have ordinary explanations or remain unexplained, they continue to capture the imagination of Oklahomans and fuel conversations about what might be flying overhead.
For many, the mystery itself is part of the fascination.
