The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum is experiencing its biggest year ever as Route 66's Centennial celebration continues to draw visitors from around the world. The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton recorded the highest single-day revenue in its more than 30-year history on June 30, fueled by record attendance and booming gift shop sales.

Museum officials say the milestone reflects a much larger trend. Attendance during the first six months of 2026 has increased by 300% compared to the same period last year, putting the museum on pace for its strongest year since opening its doors.

Leaders say the growing interest highlights Oklahoma's central role in celebrating America's most famous highway during its historic 100th anniversary.

The record-setting day generated more than seven times the museum's average daily revenue, according to officials with the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Museum Director Cory Cart said the achievement goes far beyond a single successful day, calling it a reflection of growing international interest in Oklahoma's stretch of the Mother Road.

"This milestone is about much more than one exceptional day," Cart said. "We are seeing unprecedented interest from travelers around the world who want to experience the history, culture and communities that make Route 66 so special."

The museum has also attracted significant national and international media attention during the Route 66 Centennial. Over the past several months, travel writers, journalists and content creators representing 13 states have visited Clinton, resulting in coverage from outlets including The Washington Post, CBS Chicago, the BBC, and numerous other publications.

Museum Expands Visitor Experience To Meet Growing Demand

As visitation continues climbing, the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum has expanded staffing, launched a volunteer docent program, and nearly doubled the size of its gift shop.

The renovated retail space now features hundreds of additional Route 66-themed gifts and souvenirs designed to give travelers a memorable piece of America's Main Street to take home.

Cart said those investments were intentionally made to encourage visitors to spend more time exploring the museum while learning about Oklahoma's unique role in Route 66 history.

The museum's success has also drawn praise from Chantry Banks, director of the Museums and Historic Sites Division for the Oklahoma Historical Society.

"Under Cory's leadership, the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum keeps its 'must-see' status on the route," Banks said. "This single-day record is a remarkable achievement, and I'm so proud of the entire team in Clinton."
