Combining Agriculture and Energy
Oklahoma state lawmakers are learning how farmers can make their land work double duty through a concept called Power and Protein. Cody Huwa with HUWA Enterprises told senators during an interim study that dual cropping is helping stabilize farm income while meeting the country’s growing energy needs.
Huwa Quote
“It provides stability in the chaos,” Huwa said, explaining how the approach balances fluctuating commodity prices with guaranteed energy lease payments.
How Dual Cropping Works
The program allows agricultural land to be used for solar farms while still keeping it available for traditional farming and ranching. Lawmakers heard that this strategy:
Supports rural economies with steady revenue streams.
Reduces land-use conflicts between energy and agriculture.
Helps the U.S. meet future power demands with renewable resources.
