Lights Out in Cashion Leads to One Wild Oklahoma Football Night

Under the Friday night lights in Cashion, everything came to a sudden stop — when the lights went out. What started as a district title showdown between Cashion football and Fairview turned into one of the most memorable nights in Oklahoma high school sports.

With the score tied at 36 and just 29 seconds left, a blown transformer nearby plunged the entire stadium into darkness. Players, coaches, fans, and cheerleaders were left wondering what to do next.

“The momentum is huge, and our kids are going crazy,” said Cashion Head Coach and Athletics Director Lynn Shackelford. “We’re lining up to kick off, and then boom — the lights go out.”

When the Lights Went Out, the Game Went On

Fairview Head Coach Robert Bernard said it felt surreal. “Definitely a weird feeling. Like, what are we doing? What are our next steps?”

After a few phone calls and some quick thinking, both schools agreed to finish the game 15 miles away in Crescent. Crescent’s team had already wrapped up its own game and offered to keep the stadium open.

Crescent Athletics Director Shawn Booth said it just felt right. “They told us there had been a transformer blow and asked if we could host. I thought it was the right thing to do, so we went with it.”

The Great Migration from Cashion to Crescent

Fans, bands, and players all packed up and hit the road — headlights replacing stadium lights.

Booth said, “It kind of felt like Field of Dreams. I looked up and saw all these cars coming in. It was wild.”

An hour later, the teams took the field again in Crescent. The game went to overtime. Cashion hit a field goal, but Fairview answered with a touchdown to win 42–39 and claim the district title.

“It didn’t end like we wanted, but our kids will never forget it,” said Shackelford.

A Night Oklahoma Sports Won’t Forget

One blown transformer turned into a story that’ll live in Oklahoma football history — a reminder that even in the dark, the game goes on.
