Temporary Closures for Population Management

The Oklahoma Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation says parts of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will be closed later this month for scheduled controlled hunts aimed at managing deer and elk populations. The program — which permits hunts only in certain zones and uses a lottery or drawing system — is designed to maintain ecological balance and reduce overpopulation impacts.

Schedule & Access Details

The controlled hunts will affect public access in western portions of the refuge, with closures lasting two days for the deer hunt and additional closures planned in December, January, and February for elk hunts. closures, alternative areas of the refuge will remain open. Visitors are urged to check the refuge website or contact the visitor center for updates on access and safety guidelines.

Why It Matters for Visitors & Wildlife

For local residents and outdoor enthusiasts, the managed-hunt program underscores a careful approach to wildlife conservation, ensuring healthy herds, limit ecosystem damage, and reduce vehicle collisions. The upcoming closures may impact local travel and recreation patterns in the region surrounding Lawton and the refuge. Visitors with planned trips are advised to review closure maps and adjust accordingly.
