Oklahoma Highway Patrol Clears Tulsa Homeless Camps
For the second time in a month, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers cleared out homeless camps in Tulsa. The sweep removed several encampments that had recently been repopulated after earlier cleanups.
No arrests were made, but the action displaced dozens of people who had returned to the sites. Homeless residents like Barry Stites and April Fuller said they weren’t given enough time to gather belongings before officers arrived.
Residents Left Without Belongings
“Help us,” Stites said. “We had nowhere else to go.” Fuller added that officers told them to move immediately, leaving most of their possessions behind. Whatever remained is now gone.
City officials said cleanup efforts target public safety hazards and property concerns. Yet advocates say repeated sweeps only deepen the crisis and fail to address root causes of homelessness.
Tulsa Plans New Low-Barrier Shelter
Tulsa leaders said a new low-barrier shelter is in the works, but it won’t open until next year. In the meantime, the city is preparing a winter shelter to keep people safe during cold months.
Advocates urge faster action, saying temperatures will drop before new housing options arrive. As winter approaches, the tension between safety and survival continues on Tulsa’s streets.
