Oklahoma Attorney General Race Highlights Public Safety, Corruption And Consumer Protection

The two candidates seeking to become Oklahoma's next attorney general are outlining sharply different priorities as the Oklahoma Attorney General race enters its final 100 days before the Nov. 3 General Election.

Republican Jon Echols and Democrat Nick Coffey recently discussed their qualifications, campaign priorities and vision for the Attorney General's Office during separate interviews with News 9's Hank Cavagnaro.

Oklahoma Attorney General Race Focuses On Different Priorities

Echols, a former Oklahoma House Majority Floor Leader and attorney, said his campaign centers on creating a "safer, freer, stronger Oklahoma." He identified public safety as his top priority, pledging to aggressively target illegal marijuana operations and continue promoting conservative policies if elected.

Echols also pointed to his background as a small business owner, litigator and 12-year state legislator as qualifications for the office. He said his experience creating government accountability measures, including the Legislative Office of Fiscal Transparency (LOFT), prepared him to oversee state agencies and protect taxpayer dollars.

Coffey, an Oklahoma City attorney and former federal prosecutor, said his first priorities would include creating an Office of Public Integrity, expanding enforcement against illegal marijuana operations and increasing efforts to combat unwanted spam calls.

He also emphasized consumer protection, particularly as Oklahoma prepares for additional industrial development, including large data centers that could affect utility costs for residents.

Candidates Highlight Different Professional Experience

Coffey told News 9 his experience prosecuting federal criminal cases sets him apart from his opponent.

He cited years working with the U.S. Department of Justice, including investigations involving the FBI and DEA, drug trafficking, money laundering, organized crime and illegal marijuana operations. Coffey also pointed to his work overseeing extraditions involving a Mexican drug cartel leader and argued Oklahoma voters should elect "a prosecutor, not a politician."

Echols said his legal experience includes appearing in courtrooms across Oklahoma for more than two decades while serving as a conservative leader in the Legislature. He said the attorney general's role extends beyond criminal prosecutions by ensuring state government follows the law and protecting taxpayer interests.

Both candidates said they believe their backgrounds have prepared them to serve as Oklahoma's chief legal officer beginning on day one if elected.

Election Set For November 3

The Oklahoma Attorney General race will be decided during the Nov. 3, 2026 General Election.

Throughout the campaign, Echols has characterized the election as a choice between conservative and liberal governing philosophies, while Coffey has focused on government accountability, public corruption and consumer protection. Both candidates said they welcome a campaign centered on qualifications and policy differences rather than personal attacks.

According to the Oklahoma State Election Board, voters can verify their registration status, locate polling places and review election information through the agency's online voter portal. Local county election board contact information is also available through the State Election Board for questions regarding voting locations, absentee ballots and election procedures.
