Oklahoma Universities Climb In Latest U.S. News National Rankings

Several Oklahoma universities are earning national recognition after moving up in the latest U.S. News & World Report National Universities Rankings, reflecting continued growth in student success, graduation rates and academic performance.

The newest rankings place four Oklahoma institutions among the nation's top universities, led by the University of Oklahoma, which posted one of the largest ranking improvements in the country among Southeastern Conference schools.

The University of Oklahoma climbed 22 spots to No. 110 nationally, tying for its highest placement in recent years and becoming the state's highest-ranked university.

According to U.S. News & World Report, OU's jump represents the largest improvement among all Southeastern Conference (SEC) institutions included in this year's rankings.

The University of Tulsa ranked No. 158, continuing its upward trend while maintaining a national reputation for small class sizes and low student-to-faculty ratios.

Oklahoma State University placed No. 198, while Oklahoma City University earned the state's fourth-highest ranking at No. 301.

The rankings are based on factors including graduation rates, first-year student retention, faculty resources, institutional reputation and student outcomes.

Strong Universities Support Oklahoma's Workforce

Higher education leaders say improving Oklahoma universities rankings is about more than national recognition—it also strengthens the state's economy and workforce.

Highly ranked universities help attract students, faculty, research opportunities and private investment while preparing graduates for careers in Oklahoma's largest industries, including aerospace, defense, energy, healthcare and technology.

According to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, Oklahoma's public higher education system generates more than $14.6 billion in annual economic impact and supports approximately 111,000 jobs across the state.

The Regents also report the system produces roughly $17 in economic output for every $1 invested by the Oklahoma Legislature and generates more than $461 million in local and state tax revenue each year.

Higher Rankings Help Keep Oklahoma Talent At Home

State leaders have long worked to address Oklahoma's "brain drain," where college graduates leave the state in search of employment elsewhere.

Supporters say stronger national rankings demonstrate that students can receive a nationally recognized education without leaving Oklahoma, making it more likely graduates will begin their careers here.

According to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, 93.7% of resident undergraduate graduates remain employed in Oklahoma immediately after graduation, helping strengthen local communities and meet workforce demands across the state.

As Oklahoma universities continue improving their national standing, education leaders say the benefits extend well beyond campus, supporting economic development, attracting new employers and helping position Oklahoma as a destination for both students and businesses.
