Tulsa musical road debuts ahead of Route 66 centennial

The Tulsa musical road debuts as the first of its kind in Oklahoma, bringing a new attraction to historic Route 66.

The installation sits along Southwest Boulevard near the Cyrus Avery Memorial Bridge and plays “This Land is Your Land” when drivers travel at 35 miles per hour, according to City of Tulsa Route 66 project details .

City leaders say the project is part of preparations for the upcoming Route 66 Centennial.

The Tulsa musical road debuts using specially engineered grooves in the pavement.

As vehicles pass over the surface, vibrations create musical notes that can be heard inside the car.

Officials say similar musical road installations exist worldwide, but this is the first in Oklahoma, according to Route 66 Centennial Commission information.

The Tulsa musical road debuts with a song deeply tied to Oklahoma history.

“This Land is Your Land,” written by Okemah native Woody Guthrie, was selected for its global recognition and cultural impact.

State leaders say the project blends tourism, history, and innovation while highlighting Oklahoma’s role in the legacy of Route 66, according to Oklahoma Route 66 Revitalization Program details.
