Massive Migration Draws Wildlife Photographers to Oklahoma

An estimated 6,000 white geese have arrived in the Lake Texoma region as part of their annual winter migration. The flock includes both Snow Geese and Ross’s Geese, two species known for their striking white plumage and massive synchronized flight patterns.

The spectacle draws thousands of bird watchers and photographers to the area each year.

Winter Wheat Planted Specifically to Support the Flock

Wildlife officials say the birds are feeding on 300 acres of winter wheat intentionally planted to support their migration. The practice helps keep the geese fed during their long winter stay and reduces crop damage in nearby agricultural fields.

Geese Expected to Stay Several Weeks

The geese typically remain in the Texoma region for several weeks before continuing their migration south. Local tourism officials say the migration brings a noticeable bump in winter visitors, especially wildlife photographers seeking close-range photography opportunities.

No issues have been reported with the migration this year, and viewing areas remain open to the public.
