Senator Alan Armstrong Backs Nuclear Innovation Campus For Rural Oklahoma
U.S. Senator Alan Armstrong says Oklahoma must pursue transformative economic development projects if rural communities are going to remain competitive, arguing that large-scale investments in energy and manufacturing could reverse decades of economic decline across the state.
Armstrong, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate in March 2026 following Markwayne Mullin's appointment as Secretary of Homeland Security, has made energy infrastructure and rural economic development a central focus of his time in office. During recent public remarks, the senator defended proposals including Oklahoma's bid for a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus, while emphasizing that local communities deserve complete transparency before any major project moves forward.
Senator Alan Armstrong Says Rural Oklahoma Needs Investment
Armstrong believes many rural Oklahoma communities are struggling to attract new employers and maintain long-term economic growth.
He argues that traditional economic development strategies are no longer enough to reverse population losses or bring new investment into smaller communities. Instead, he says Oklahoma should aggressively pursue major industrial projects capable of creating thousands of long-term jobs.
Among the projects Armstrong supports are advanced manufacturing facilities, large-scale industrial developments and modern nuclear energy initiatives.
While acknowledging that proposals involving nuclear technology often generate public concern, Armstrong has encouraged residents to review scientific and engineering data before reaching conclusions.
He also stressed that local governments and residents should receive complete information before decisions involving multi-billion-dollar developments are finalized, saying transparency is essential to building public trust.
Oklahoma Competing For Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus
One of the largest projects under consideration is Oklahoma's proposal to host a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus through the U.S. Department of Energy.
Oklahoma is one of five finalist states, joining Idaho, Louisiana, Tennessee and Utah in the national competition.
The proposed campus would support multiple stages of the nuclear fuel cycle, including fuel enrichment, advanced fuel fabrication and recycling of spent nuclear fuel.
One of the most debated aspects of the proposal involves the potential storage and management of spent nuclear fuel collected from around the country.
That requirement has generated questions from residents concerned about long-term safety, transportation and environmental impacts if Oklahoma is ultimately selected.
Economic Benefits Could Reach Rural Communities
Supporters of the proposal believe the project could reshape Oklahoma's economy for decades.
State leaders estimate the Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus could attract as much as $50 billion in private and public investment while creating nearly 25,000 jobs if Oklahoma is selected as one of the final host sites.
Armstrong argues those types of investments are critical to preserving rural communities that continue facing economic challenges and population declines.
He also says public engagement will remain an important part of the process, emphasizing that residents deserve honest conversations about both the potential economic benefits and the concerns surrounding projects of this magnitude. The U.S. Department of Energy is expected to announce the final host locations before the end of 2026, making the coming months significant for Oklahoma's long-term economic future.
