Holiday Challenges Hit Oklahoma Pet Owners

Federal Shutdown Worsens Need

During the holiday season some pet owners have challenges feeding their pets. Additionally, seasonal cost increases already strain families with limited income. Add the federal government shutdown to that and the challenges get even bigger. The shutdown limits federal relief access and puts more families in short-term crisis mode, especially those dependent on SNAP and budget timing cycles. Crystal Slocum with the Oklahoma City Pet Food Bank says they need donations.

Nonprofit Seeking Donations And Pet Food Supplies

Slocum says they also have collars and leashes and if you need shelter for your pets, they have dog houses, too. Additionally, she says the nonprofit tries to prevent animal abandonment or surrender when economic pressure spikes. The group says the pet food shortage grows dramatically this time each year because pets still need daily nutrition even as families shift spending toward holiday needs. Additionally, those costs collide with inflation, medical needs, and holiday travel obligations.

Local Support Critical During Shutdown

Slocum says community donations can prevent families from having to surrender pets at shelters. Additionally, every donated bag, can, or dollar directly goes toward keeping animals in homes with the people who love them. The organization says even short-term pantry support reduces shelter overcrowding and reduces euthanasia risk. Finally, donors can help bridge families into January when financial stabilization typically returns.
