Oklahoma State Names Eric Morris as New Head Coach

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have officially announced Eric Morris as their 25th head football coach, pending board approval. Morris currently leads the Mean Green at University of North Texas (UNT) and will take over full-time after the conclusion of the 2025 season.

The hire marks the first time since 1969 that OSU has brought aboard a sitting head coach from another Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program.

Offensive Mind and QB-Developer

Morris is widely regarded for his offensive acumen and history of developing top quarterbacks. Over his career he’s coached or recruited standouts like Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, and several others — a pedigree that appealed strongly to OSU leadership.

UNT’s 2025 offense under Morris ranks among the top in FBS in yards and points per game, a key factor in OSU’s decision to look for immediate turnaround.

OSU Betting on Fresh Start After Rough Seasons

The timing of the hire reflects OSU’s desire to reset after a rocky stretch — the program had struggled in recent seasons, including a record of just 1–10 this year with interim coaching under Doug Meacham.

University Athletic Director lauded Morris’ recruiting strength and ability to build relationships with players. OSU hopes Morris can revitalize not just on-field performance but also off-field recruitment and talent development.
