OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Oklahoma Corporation Commission will hear from energy experts this fall about the possibility of adding nuclear power to the state’s energy portfolio.
Why Nuclear, Why Now
The push comes amid concerns that electricity demand will continue to rise, especially with data centers opening across the U.S. Oklahoma lawmakers say they want a clearer picture of how nuclear might fit alongside the state’s traditional fossil fuel dominance.
Who’s Involved
A working group has been formed, including utilities and the Harold Hamm Institute for American Energy, to examine costs, risks, and benefits. Their findings must be delivered to legislative leaders by March of 2026.
Looking Ahead
While Oklahoma has long relied on oil and natural gas, advocates say nuclear could provide cleaner baseload power. Critics caution that nuclear projects are expensive and face political resistance.
