Oklahoma City, OK-Utility Says New Power Units Are Critical
Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E) has filed a request with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to raise customer rates in order to fund new energy projects.
The utility plans to build two new natural gas units at its Horseshoe Lake Power Plant in eastern Oklahoma County and secure long-term power contracts from third-party providers.
“This new electric generation is critical to provide even more reliable and resilient electric service as we plan for the future,” OG&E said in a notice to customers.
How Much Could OG&E Bills Increase?
If approved, rate hikes would begin in 2026 and continue through 2031:
Residential customers: up to $4.81 more per month by 2031.
General service customers: nearly $6 more per month.
Large industrial customers: increases could exceed $4,600 monthly by 2031.
Next Steps
The request will be reviewed at a Corporation Commission hearing on Oct. 8 with an administrative law judge serving as referee.
OG&E says the projects were chosen after a competitive bidding process to secure the lowest-cost energy options.
