Oklahoma School Library Materials Bill Passes Senate
The Oklahoma school library materials bill has passed the Oklahoma State Senate after a lengthy debate over books and content in school libraries.
Senate Bill 1250, authored by State Senator Warren Hamilton, passed on a 39–8 vote and now moves to the Oklahoma House of Representatives for consideration.
Supporters say the legislation is intended to protect students from obscene or sexually explicit materials in school and charter school libraries.
Oklahoma School Library Materials Bill Creates Reporting Process
Under the Oklahoma school library materials bill, books considered “obscene” or harmful to minors could be removed from school libraries.
Parents or guardians would be able to report concerns to local school boards, with appeals ultimately reviewed by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
School districts that fail to comply could be labeled deficient in accreditation reports.
Debate Highlights Concerns Over Impact
The Oklahoma school library materials bill sparked about 90 minutes of debate among lawmakers.
Senate Minority Leader Julia Kirt raised concerns that the legislation could restrict access to important literature.
Other lawmakers also questioned whether the language could potentially affect widely known books or religious texts.
