Oklahoma Adjunct Teacher Bill Advances
Oklahoma lawmakers are moving forward with legislation aimed at limiting the use of non-certified teachers in public school classrooms.
The Oklahoma adjunct teacher bill, Senate Bill 1614, passed the Oklahoma State Senate and now heads to the next stage in the legislative process.
Supporters say the goal is to slow the expansion of non-certified adjunct teachers while still helping schools deal with the ongoing teacher shortage.
Oklahoma Adjunct Teacher Bill Limits Classroom Roles
Under the Oklahoma adjunct teacher bill, adjunct teachers would be required to have at least a high school diploma.
The measure would also block non-fully certified teachers from working full-time teaching reading or math for kindergarten through fifth grade students.
Education policies and certification standards are overseen by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
Additional Bills Also Proposed
Other proposals being considered by the Oklahoma Legislature would place additional limits on adjunct teachers and require them to work toward full certification.
Supporters say the effort is focused on making sure younger students receive instruction from properly trained teachers.
