Oklahoma Leaders, OU and OSU Students React to Charlie Kirk Assassination
Political Leaders Express Grief
Oklahoma Senator James Lankford issued a statement after conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was assassinated during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Lankford said he and his wife are praying for Kirk’s family. Senator Markwayne Mullin, who described Kirk as a close friend, called him a “fearless patriot.”
Governor Kevin Stitt has ordered flags to fly at half-staff to honor Kirk. “The world is a darker place without Kirk here,” Stitt said.
Student Vigils Across Oklahoma Campuses
Students at both the University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oklahoma State University (OSU) are holding events in response. At OU, more than 100 students gathered for a prayer vigil on campus.
The OSU chapter of Turning Point USA says it is planning a larger memorial service for next week. Kirk had recently visited OSU in April, where he spoke about conservative youth activism and political engagement.
A National Movement with Local Impact
Turning Point USA has chapters at more than 800 colleges nationwide, including both OU and OSU. The assassination of Kirk is being described by many supporters as not just a loss of a leader, but a blow to the conservative youth movement nationwide.
