Oklahoma Artifacts Chosen For America250 Time Capsule To Be Opened In 2276
A piece of Oklahoma history is about to be sealed away for the next 250 years. Seven Oklahoma artifacts have been selected for inclusion in the America250 National Time Capsule, which will be sealed on July 4 and remain unopened until the nation's 500th anniversary celebration in 2276.
The time capsule will be housed at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, where it will preserve items representing all 50 states, U.S. territories, and the three branches of the federal government.
State leaders say Oklahoma's collection highlights the people, events, and traditions that define the Sooner State while preserving a snapshot of life in 2026 for generations yet to come.
Oklahoma Artifacts Celebrate History, Heritage And Achievement
The selected Oklahoma artifacts reflect the state's rich history, military service, Native American heritage, transportation legacy, and modern accomplishments.
Items chosen for the America250 National Time Capsule include:
An executive proclamation signed by Governor Kevin Stitt declaring July 4, 2026, as Oklahoma Semi-Quincentennial Day.
A commemorative belt buckle honoring Oklahoma's pioneering spirit.
An Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Championship pin celebrating the franchise's historic 2025 NBA Championship.

An Oklahoma National Guard challenge coin recognizing the service of Oklahoma's citizen soldiers.
A Route 66 Centennial commemorative coin celebrating Oklahoma's historic connection to the Mother Road.

America250 Will Preserve Today's Story For Future Generations
The America250 National Time Capsule is part of the nationwide observance commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Every state, U.S. territory, and all three branches of the federal government were invited to contribute artifacts representing their history, culture, and identity. The capsule will be placed at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia and remain sealed until July 4, 2276, when the United States celebrates its 500th birthday.
Organizers say the collection is designed to provide future Americans with a unique look at what life, culture, and priorities looked like across the nation during the country's 250th anniversary celebration.

Oklahoma's Collection Reflects The State's Past And Present
Amy Blackburn, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department and co-chair of the Oklahoma Semi-Quincentennial Commission, called the selection a unique opportunity to preserve Oklahoma's story for centuries.
She said the artifacts were intentionally chosen to showcase the state's heritage while also highlighting achievements that have united Oklahomans in recent years.
From honoring the state's 39 Tribal Nations and the service of the Oklahoma National Guard to recognizing Route 66 and celebrating the Oklahoma City Thunder's historic NBA championship, the collection tells the story of a state that continues to honor its past while embracing its future.

When the capsule is finally opened in 2276, the Oklahoma artifacts will give future generations a rare glimpse into the people, traditions, accomplishments, and milestones that helped define Oklahoma during America's 250th anniversary celebration.
