McVay Files Candidacy
Craig McVay, a retired superintendent from El Reno Public Schools, is running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction as a Democrat. He officially filed with the Oklahoma Ethics Commission this week.
McVay’s entry brings a veteran educator’s perspective to the race. He says his focus will be on kids first, politics second.
“If I’m elected, there won’t be much to write about because I’ll be upfront and all about the kids,” McVay told The Oklahoman.
Education Politics in the Spotlight
McVay’s candidacy comes at a pivotal time. Outgoing Superintendent Ryan Walters’ tenure drew headlines for partisan battles and public controversy. McVay is positioning himself as the opposite: a steady, student-focused leader who wants to de-politicize education.
Democratic Challenge Ahead
Running as a Democrat in Oklahoma presents challenges, but McVay could appeal to moderate voters who are frustrated with the politicization of schools. His campaign is expected to emphasize classroom needs, teacher support, and student achievement.
