How the Tower Came Down
Two copper thieves have been sentenced for a crime that caused widespread disruption to a rural Oklahoma radio station.
In 2023, the nearly 500-foot broadcast tower of KITX radio near Hugo was toppled after thieves cut into the transmission line to steal copper.
Federal Sentencing
Candice Logan, 35, received 8 months in prison.
Matthew Wilson, 38, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.
Both admitted to selling the stolen copper across the state line in Texas.
Impact on Rural Broadcasting
The incident forced KITX off the air and highlighted how vulnerable broadcast infrastructure can be to theft. Local officials have since called for stronger protections against metal theft in rural areas.
