As the University of Oklahoma Sooners prepare for their season opener this Saturday, head coach Brent Venables is reflecting on the state of the program when he took over.

Venables admitted he underestimated the magnitude of the challenges the program faced when he stepped into the role.
“The team was gutted by transfers, graduations and years of poor development and recruiting,” Venables said.
He emphasized that the program essentially had to be rebuilt “from the beginning” to restore the Sooners’ competitiveness.
