Why Enid Is Requesting Stronger Rules
The city of Enid says oilfield disposal wells are becoming more prevalent near public water supplies, raising concerns for long-term drinking water safety. Officials argue stricter protections are needed to prevent pollution risks.
What the Current Law Allows
Current Oklahoma law prohibits commercial disposal wells within one mile of Enid’s public water wells. Other wells within a half-mile can only be approved after a hearing where the operator must prove no risk to the city’s water supply.
What Enid Wants Changed
Enid is requesting an amendment that would prohibit disposal wells within a half-mile outright, without hearings, and require special field rules for any wells within one mile.
Next Steps at the Corporation Commission
Commissioners will take up the request Thursday during their regular meeting in Oklahoma City.
