Broken Arrow Mosque Vote Follows Public Debate
The Broken Arrow City Council voted Monday night to deny zoning and permit requests submitted by the Islamic Society of Tulsa, which sought approval for a new mosque to address overcrowding at its Midtown Tulsa location.
The vote follows intense public discussion and a recently announced investigation by Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond into the project’s funding sources.
City Council Cites Land Use Standards
One council member emphasized the Broken Arrow mosque vote was not based on religion, but on land use compatibility.
“This decision is about zoning standards and development requirements,” the council member said during deliberations.
Attorney General Investigation Continues
Attorney General Drummond confirmed his office will continue reviewing whether the proposed project complies with state and federal law, including transparency and nonprofit funding requirements.
City officials say the applicant may revise and resubmit plans in the future.
