Black Mesa Earns Dark Sky Designation
Black Mesa State Park is now officially recognized as Oklahoma’s only Dark Sky location, a prestigious designation earned after years of work to eliminate light pollution and preserve natural night skies.
Park officials removed streetlights and replaced remaining outdoor lighting with fully shielded fixtures, creating a nearly four-square-mile area where artificial light is minimized.
Stargazing Unlike Anywhere Else in Oklahoma
The designation means visitors can clearly see the Milky Way, planets, and thousands of stars — a rare experience in an increasingly light-polluted world. Dark Sky status is awarded only after strict international criteria are met, including lighting controls, public education, and long-term conservation commitments.
Boost for Tourism and Conservation
Officials say the designation positions Black Mesa as a destination for astronomy enthusiasts, photographers, and eco-tourism. The park, located in Oklahoma’s Panhandle, already draws visitors for hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing.
