American Red Cross Declares National Blood Crisis As Donations Fall

The American Red Cross national blood crisis has reached a critical level after blood donations dropped to their lowest summer point in four years, prompting the organization to declare only the second national blood supply crisis in its history.

The shortage has been fueled by a combination of extreme heat, poor air quality from widespread wildfires and foodborne illness outbreaks, leaving hospitals across the country with dangerously low blood supplies. The Red Cross is now urging eligible donors to schedule appointments immediately to help stabilize inventories.

American Red Cross National Blood Crisis Impacts Hospitals Nationwide

According to the American Red Cross, the organization has less than a one-day national supply of Type O-positive blood, the most frequently transfused blood type in the United States.

As the nation's largest supplier of blood products, the Red Cross has begun limiting distributions of Type O blood to hospitals in an effort to ensure patients facing life-threatening emergencies continue receiving care.

Officials warn the shortage could delay surgeries, reduce blood availability for trauma patients and place additional strain on hospitals already managing increased demand during the busy summer months.

The Red Cross says this is only the second time it has declared a national blood supply crisis, with the first occurring in January 2022.

Summer Conditions Have Reduced Blood Donations

While blood donations typically decline during the summer, this year's shortage has been intensified by prolonged heat waves, unhealthy air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses that have kept many regular donors from giving blood.

The Red Cross says hospital demand has remained high despite the drop in donations, particularly during the summer trauma season when emergency transfusions are more common.

Officials estimate that just three additional donors at every blood drive this summer would be enough to stabilize the national blood supply and help restore inventories.

The organization encourages donors of all blood types to participate, although Type O-positive and Type O-negative donations remain especially important because they are frequently used during emergencies.

Red Cross Urges Eligible Donors To Schedule Appointments

The Red Cross encourages anyone who is eligible to schedule a donation through RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by using the official Blood Donor App.

As a thank-you, donors who give blood through July 31, 2026, will receive a $15 Fandango Movie Ticket by email. Those who donate between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31, 2026, will receive a $20 Amazon Gift Card by email.

The Red Cross says maintaining a stable blood supply depends entirely on volunteer donors and reminds the public that every donation has the potential to save multiple lives. Officials say the current shortage can be overcome if enough eligible donors schedule appointments in the coming weeks.
