Excessive Heat Warning Raises Risk Of Heat-Related Illness Across Oklahoma

An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect across much of Oklahoma as afternoon temperatures climb to 103 degrees, with heat index values expected to reach 109 degrees in some areas.

Health officials warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can quickly overwhelm the body's natural cooling system, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other life-threatening medical emergencies. With dangerously hot conditions expected to continue, Oklahomans are encouraged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness.

Excessive Heat Warning Means It Feels Hotter Than The Air Temperature

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index, often called the "feels like" temperature, combines the actual air temperature with relative humidity to show how hot conditions feel to the human body.

When temperatures rise, the body cools itself by producing sweat. As sweat evaporates from the skin, it removes heat and lowers the body's temperature.

However, high humidity slows the evaporation process, making it much harder for the body to cool itself. As a result, a day with an air temperature of 103 degrees can feel closer to 109 degrees when humidity is factored in.

The higher the temperature and humidity climb together, the greater the heat index becomes and the more dangerous conditions can be for anyone spending time outdoors.

Extreme Heat Places Added Stress On The Body

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prolonged exposure to excessive heat affects nearly every major system in the body.

As body temperature rises, blood vessels widen to move heat toward the skin while the heart works harder to maintain circulation. At the same time, sweating causes the body to lose water and essential minerals. Without enough fluids, dehydration develops, blood thickens and muscle cramps, dizziness and fatigue become more likely.

Extreme heat can also affect the brain, reducing concentration, judgment and memory. In severe cases, people may become confused, disoriented or lose consciousness before realizing they are in danger.

Older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions and those who work outdoors face the highest risk during prolonged periods of dangerous heat.

Heat Exhaustion Can Quickly Become Heat Stroke

The CDC warns that untreated heat exhaustion can rapidly progress into heat stroke, a life-threatening medical emergency.

Heat exhaustion often causes heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea and cool, clammy skin. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should immediately move into an air-conditioned space or shade, drink water if able and rest.

Heat stroke develops when the body's core temperature rises above 104 degrees and can cause confusion, slurred speech, seizures, vomiting, hot, dry skin and unconsciousness. Without immediate medical treatment, it can lead to organ failure or death.

Health officials recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing, drinking water frequently and checking on elderly neighbors, children and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should be treated as a medical emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.
