2027 Social Security COLA Increase: Benefits Rise 3.6%, Adding $75 to Average Monthly Check

The 2027 Social Security COLA increase will raise benefits by 3.6% beginning in January, giving millions of retired and disabled Americans additional monthly income to help offset inflation. The Social Security Administration announced the adjustment Wednesday, October 14, 2026, estimating that the average retired worker will receive approximately $75 more per month. That would bring the average monthly retirement benefit to about $2,170.

The increase will affect nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries, along with approximately 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients. The adjustment is the largest in four years, exceeding the 2.8% increase implemented for 2026. For Oklahoma retirees, particularly those living on fixed incomes, the announcement provides an important figure for planning household expenses in the coming year.

2027 Social Security COLA Increase Changes Monthly Payments

According to the Social Security Administration's October 14 announcement, the adjustment is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index used to calculate annual benefit increases.

The 3.6% increase applies to eligible benefits, although the actual dollar amount will vary depending on each recipient's current payment.

Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries will receive their increased payments beginning in January 2027.

SSI recipients will receive their first adjusted payment on December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a federal holiday.

New Earnings Limits Take Effect in 2027

The adjustment also brings changes to several Social Security earnings thresholds.

According to the agency's 2027 COLA fact sheet, the maximum annual earnings subject to Social Security payroll taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300.

For beneficiaries who continue working while under full retirement age, the annual earnings limit will rise to $25,560.

Earnings above that threshold may result in temporary benefit withholding under Social Security's retirement earnings rules.

These limits do not apply in the same way to individuals who have reached full retirement age.

Oklahoma Retirees Can Review Their Updated Benefits

The Social Security Administration will provide beneficiaries with personalized notices explaining their new benefit amounts.

Recipients can also review information through their personal my Social Security account, including benefit statements and available notices.

The agency calculates annual cost-of-living adjustments to help benefits keep pace with inflation, but individual household expenses may rise differently.

For retirees managing housing, utilities, groceries and healthcare costs, the increase represents additional income rather than a guarantee that every expense will be fully offset.

Beneficiaries should also account for any applicable Medicare premium deductions when calculating their actual monthly deposits.
