OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Nineteen Native American children who died more than a century ago while attending the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania will soon be returned to Oklahoma for reburial.
Historic Return of Native American Children After Generations
The children, from the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribe, were among more than 200 who died while at the federally run boarding school. For years, tribal leaders and families have sought their return, saying the children deserve to rest on their own lands.
Voices from Tribal Nations
“This is about bringing our children home,” tribal leaders said. “They were taken from their families and communities, and now we can honor them with the ceremonies and dignity they were denied.”
Next Steps
Plans are underway for transport back to Oklahoma, where traditional reburial ceremonies will be conducted.
