Oklahoma City,OK-Governor Challenges Tulsa-Muskogee Settlement
Governor Kevin Stitt has filed a request with the Oklahoma Supreme Court to intervene in a settlement reached between the City of Tulsa and the Muskogee Creek Nation earlier this year.
The June agreement grants tribal courts jurisdiction over municipal criminal cases involving tribal members.
Stitt Warns of "Two Systems of Justice"
Stitt argues that the deal would fracture Oklahoma’s legal system:
Stitt says, “This settlement creates two systems of justice in one city. No mayor has the authority to determine which laws apply to which citizens.”
Tulsa officials, however, say the settlement provides legal clarity following the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt decision, which expanded tribal jurisdiction across much of eastern Oklahoma.
