YWCA Oklahoma City Launches $100,000 Emergency Campaign After Shelter Cooling System Failure

The YWCA Oklahoma City has launched a $100,000 emergency fundraising campaign after a catastrophic cooling system failure forced 55 domestic violence survivors and their children to temporarily leave the organization's emergency shelter.

Although temporary repairs have allowed families to return, the shelter remains on an intake hold for new residents until a permanent commercial chiller can be installed. Organization leaders say the emergency campaign will help replace the failed cooling system while ensuring survivors continue receiving lifesaving services during Oklahoma's extreme summer heat.

YWCA Oklahoma City Launches Emergency Fundraising Campaign

The emergency campaign focuses on replacing the shelter's commercial HVAC chiller while helping offset the unexpected costs created by the system failure.

The YWCA Oklahoma City is encouraging Oklahomans to make financial donations through its Shelter HVAC Fund, which will directly support installation of a new cooling system and help cover emergency operating expenses. Community members can contribute through the YWCA Oklahoma City Donation Portal.

The organization is also asking local restaurants, chefs and caterers to provide prepared meals while shelter staff limit kitchen operations to reduce strain on the temporary cooling system.

In addition, the shelter is requesting high-priority supplies through its Amazon Wishlist, including women's leggings, hair accessories, satin bonnets and curly hair care products. Physical donations can be delivered to the YWCA Oklahoma City Administrative Office at 2460 NW 39th Street.

Organization leaders say every contribution helps ensure survivors continue receiving safe shelter while permanent repairs are completed.

YWCA Oklahoma City Continues Victim Services

Although the emergency shelter has temporarily paused new admissions, the YWCA Oklahoma City says its advocacy services remain fully operational.

Victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking can still receive safety planning, protective order assistance, crisis advocacy and referrals to additional community resources. The organization says the intake hold applies only to emergency shelter housing while crews work toward replacing the failed cooling system.
