Union Station Renovation Moves Forward With $16 Million Restoration In Oklahoma City

The historic Union Station renovation is moving ahead after the Oklahoma City Council approved an additional $4 million in funding, bringing the total project investment to $16 million.

According to KOCO 5, the funding will allow the city to continue restoring the 1930s-era landmark while preserving its historic character and transforming it into a modern community gathering space.

City leaders say the long-awaited project has faced delays because of rising construction costs and the extensive work required to update the building's aging infrastructure.

Once completed, Union Station is expected to become a premier venue for weddings, community events, and public gatherings while remaining an important part of Oklahoma City's history.

Union Station Renovation Includes Major Infrastructure Upgrades

The Union Station renovation will involve far more than cosmetic improvements.

According to KOCO 5, the project includes extensive upgrades to the building's electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and accessibility systems to bring the nearly century-old structure up to modern standards.

MAPS Program Manager David Todd said much of the project's cost comes from replacing outdated infrastructure that has aged significantly over the decades.

Construction is expected to begin as early as this fall with assistance from Lingo Construction, which will oversee project management.

The additional $4 million approved by the City Council will be combined with surplus MAPS 3 collections and interest earnings to fully fund the restoration.

Historic Features Will Be Preserved During Restoration

While modernization is a major focus, city leaders say preserving the building's history remains equally important throughout the Union Station renovation.

According to KOCO 5, crews plan to protect many of the station's original architectural features, including its historic flooring, decorative lighting, and other defining elements.

Originally constructed during the 1930s, Union Station has long served as one of Oklahoma City's most recognizable railroad landmarks.

Officials say preserving those historic details will allow future generations to appreciate the building's past while giving it a renewed purpose for decades to come.

The restoration is designed to balance historic preservation with the practical needs of a modern public facility.

Union Station Expected To Become Community Event Destination

City officials envision the completed Union Station renovation creating one of downtown Oklahoma City's premier event venues.

Located adjacent to Scissortail Park, the restored building is expected to host weddings, community celebrations, civic events, and other public gatherings throughout the year.

Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said creating an active public space has always been one of the primary goals of the project.

Officials believe the investment will help breathe new life into the historic property while complementing nearby attractions and continuing the city's downtown revitalization efforts.

The city expects to release updated renderings and a more detailed construction timeline in the coming months as work progresses.

As the Union Station renovation moves into the construction phase, city leaders say the project will preserve one of Oklahoma City's most historic landmarks while creating a vibrant public destination for future generations.
