Tulsa Air and Space Museum F-16 Fundraiser Launches $16 Challenge

Tulsa Air and Space Museum Launches $16 Challenge to Bring F-16 Thunderbird Home
The Tulsa Air and Space Museum is asking Oklahomans to help bring a piece of aviation history home through its Give $16 for the F-16 Challenge. The fundraising campaign, known as Operation: Thunderbird, aims to raise $60,000 to transport and permanently display a retired U.S. Air Force Thunderbird F-16 fighter jet at the museum.
The Tulsa Air and Space Museum F-16 fundraiser invites 3,750 supporters to contribute just $16 each, creating an opportunity for the community to participate in preserving Oklahoma's military aviation heritage. The aircraft is scheduled to arrive in Tulsa around Veterans Day, November 11, 2026, before becoming a permanent attraction honoring generations of Oklahoma aviators.
Tulsa Air and Space Museum F-16 Fundraiser Sets $60,000 Goal
According to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum's Operation Thunderbird campaign, donations will help cover the specialized disassembly, transportation and reassembly of the retired fighter jet. The project also includes constructing a dramatic arched pedestal near the museum's entrance, where the aircraft will become a prominent landmark.
The museum's Give $16 for the F-16 Challenge makes participation accessible to supporters who want to contribute to the project. Reaching the goal of 3,750 individual $16 donations would generate the full $60,000 needed for the operation.
F-16 Thunderbird Display Honors Tulsa's 138th Fighter Wing
The permanent display will recognize the 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, whose Tulsa-based airmen operated and maintained F-16 fighter aircraft for approximately three decades.
The aircraft will also honor William R. "Bill" Pogue, an Oklahoma-born astronaut who served aboard Skylab 4 and previously flew with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team.
By connecting the Thunderbirds' legacy with Oklahoma's military and space exploration history, the museum hopes to create an educational attraction for future generations.
Operation Thunderbird Targets Veterans Day Arrival in Tulsa
The museum plans to transport the aircraft from Texas between November 8 and November 10, with its anticipated arrival scheduled for Veterans Day, November 11.
Supporters can contribute directly through the Tulsa Air and Space Museum's official Operation Thunderbird donation campaign or explore additional giving opportunities through the museum's official donation page.
Once installed, the F-16 will provide visitors with a striking reminder of Oklahoma's contributions to American aviation, military service and aerospace innovation.
