A Century of Service

The oldest continuously operating library in central Oklahoma just celebrated its 100th birthday, but the celebration came with more than cake and balloons. The former Wright Library in Oklahoma City’s Stockyards area is now officially renamed the Stockyards City Library.

From Segregation Legacy to Inclusivity

The name change was driven by a dark history. The library had been named after a former board chairman who openly supported segregation. Library officials said continuing under that name conflicted with the city’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“Libraries are about access for everyone,” one official said. “This change reflects who we are today, not who we were a century ago.”

Stockyards Community Reaction

Residents attending the celebration applauded the renaming, saying it symbolizes progress. The library, which has served generations of families, remains a cornerstone of the Stockyards community.
