Governor Stitt Names New Education Leadership Team
Governor Kevin Stitt has reshaped the top of Oklahoma’s education system. On Monday, he appointed longtime educator Lindel Fields as the new state superintendent. Fields, who previously served as an administrator in the CareerTech system, takes over after the resignation of Ryan Walters.
But Fields isn’t coming alone. Stitt announced a new seven-member leadership team to help Fields “right the ship” at the State Department of Education.
Stitt said: “This is more than one appointment. This is a movement to get education back on track.”
New Appointments and Bold Proposals
In addition to naming Fields, Stitt:
Appointed two new members to the State Board of Education.
Named a new secretary of education.
Proposed a constitutional amendment to end statewide elections for superintendent.
If approved, the measure would allow governors to directly appoint future superintendents. Critics say this could centralize power, while supporters argue it will provide stability.
Political and Community Response
The decision has already sparked political debate. Some lawmakers praised the move as a reset for Oklahoma education. Others warned it could weaken accountability to voters.
For now, Fields and his new team face the challenge of rebuilding trust with educators, parents, and local districts after years of controversy.
