New Wind Farm Proposed for Southeast Oklahoma

Southeast Oklahoma could soon see another major wind farm development as plans move forward for a new renewable energy project near McAlester. Recent filings with Southwest Power Pool, the regional transmission organization overseeing the electric grid, outline a proposal for 35 wind turbines in Pittsburg County.

The project is being developed by Overland Station Wind Energy, a Chicago-based company that specializes in large-scale renewable projects. According to filings, the wind farm would interconnect with Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO), delivering electricity directly into the regional power grid.

Wind Turbines Planned Near McAlester

Developers say the McAlester wind farm would support grid reliability while expanding Oklahoma’s already significant renewable energy footprint. Oklahoma consistently ranks among the top states in the nation for wind energy production, with wind supplying more than 40% of the state’s electricity in recent years.

Overland Station Wind Energy’s parent company, Invenergy, already operates four wind farms in Oklahoma, including one of the largest wind facilities in North America. The company has emphasized its experience working with rural communities, landowners, and utilities during development and construction.

What Happens Next for the Wind Project

At this stage, the project remains in the planning and review process. Regulatory approvals, land agreements, and environmental studies would still need to be completed before construction could begin. If approved, construction would likely bring temporary jobs to the region, followed by long-term operations and maintenance positions.

Local officials have not yet commented publicly on the proposal, and no construction timeline has been announced.
