Sooner State Party Pushes for Recognition as Independent Voters Seek Political

Efforts to establish a new political party in Oklahoma are drawing attention—and criticism—as supporters of the Sooner State Party push to gain official recognition ahead of future elections.

Leaders of established political parties have begun labeling the movement a “spoiler” effort, arguing it could siphon votes and disrupt traditional races. But organizers behind the Sooner State Party say their goal is to give independent voters a political home.

Sooner State Party Targets Independent Voters

Co-founder C.J. Webber-Neal says the Sooner State Party is focused on Oklahomans who currently feel shut out of the political process. Independent voters in Oklahoma are often blocked from participating in primary elections unless parties choose to open them.

Webber-Neal says the group has already gathered more than 24,000 signatures toward the roughly 35,000 required for official party recognition under Oklahoma law. Signature verification and approval would come through the Oklahoma State Election Board.

Once recognized, the Sooner State Party plans to cover candidate filing fees for members who want to run for office, lowering financial barriers to entry.

Recognition Could Change Oklahoma Elections

Political analysts note that if recognized, the Sooner State Party could reshape close elections—particularly in districts where margins are tight. Oklahoma law requires new parties to meet strict ballot-access requirements, including maintaining voter registration thresholds after recognition.

The party maintains active outreach through Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, using social media to recruit supporters and educate voters on party goals.

State election officials say recognition decisions are governed strictly by statute, not political preference. Information on party recognition rules is available through the Oklahoma State Election Board.
