Oklahoma City,OK-New Teacher Certification Requirement Sparks Debate

Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters has announced that teachers moving to Oklahoma from what he called “liberal states” must take a 50-question test before they are allowed to work in the state’s classrooms.

Walters comments

Walters: “Perfect Score Required”

According to Walters, passing isn’t enough — teachers will need to earn a perfect score on the exam.

Walters said: “We will ensure that every one of these questions is made public so Oklahomans know exactly what values and standards are expected.”

Walters said the test is designed to screen for political and educational philosophies he believes are inconsistent with Oklahoma’s values.

What We Know About the Test

  • Contains 50 questions, though only a few have been released so far

  • Will eventually be fully public, according to Walters

  • Applies specifically to teachers seeking certification from other states

Critics Raise Concerns

Education groups warn that the policy could worsen Oklahoma’s ongoing teacher shortage, already among the most severe in the nation. Requiring a perfect score, they argue, may discourage qualified educators from moving to Oklahoma.
