Officials Urge Pet Owners to Stay Alert
Animal control officials in Edmond have issued a rabies alert after a skunk tested positive for the disease. Edmond Animal Services says the incident serves as a reminder for pet owners to make sure all animal vaccinations are current.
Rabies can infect any mammal, including dogs, cats, livestock, and humans.
What Edmond Residents Should Watch For
Authorities warn residents to avoid contact with animals behaving aggressively or acting unusually — such as appearing disoriented, unusually friendly, or unafraid of people. Anyone who encounters a possibly rabid animal should contact local animal control or law enforcement immediately.
The city also advises parents to remind children not to approach stray or wild animals.
Understanding the Risk
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear but is 100% preventable through vaccination. Public health officials say rabies cases in Oklahoma are rare but still appear a few times a year, often in rural areas where wildlife comes into contact with pets.
