Fire Destroys Shipment of Steinway Pianos
A semi-truck carrying Steinway pianos caught fire Thursday near Marietta, leaving a trail of destruction and loss. The expensive instruments were bound for Oklahoma City University’s Wanda L. Bass School of Music.
The truck driver managed to disconnect the tractor from the trailer, preventing further damage, but the entire piano shipment was lost.
Flames Engulf Trailer on Interstate 35
Witnesses reported heavy flames and smoke visible for miles. Fire crews responded quickly but could not save the contents. Officials said the blaze destroyed a full load of concert-grade pianos valued in the hundreds of thousands.
The shipment was part of OCU’s All-Steinway initiative, designed to ensure every student trains on top-tier instruments.
University Officials Express Heartbreak
The Wanda L. Bass School of Music, one of only a handful of All-Steinway institutions, confirmed the total loss. A university spokesperson said the school would work with insurers and donors to replace the pianos.
“These instruments represent more than music—they represent dreams,” the statement read. Students and alumni expressed grief but also gratitude that no one was injured.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, believed to have started in the trailer’s rear axle. Officials praised the driver’s quick actions, which likely prevented additional loss or highway injuries.
The university said plans are underway for a benefit concert to raise funds for replacements. Despite the loss, administrators vowed the school’s legacy of excellence in music education will continue.
