Petition Filed to Let Oklahomans Vote on Eliminating Property Taxes
Oklahoma voters may soon decide whether to phase out property taxes entirely under a new initiative petition filed with the Secretary of State.
The proposal, titled State Question 841, was filed by two state lawmakers and a former legislator. If it gathers enough signatures, it would appear on the November 2025 ballot.
Plan Would Gradually Cut Property Taxes to Zero by 2029
The petition proposes gradually reducing certain property taxes over several years, ending them altogether in 2029. Supporters argue the tax burden on homeowners has become too high and that removing it would stimulate the economy.
The measure would not eliminate all property tax categories, but it would significantly reduce funding streams that support county services.
Critics Warn of Severe Impact on County Government
Oklahoma County Commissioner Jason Lowe strongly opposes the measure, calling it “dangerous” and warning it would destroy county government, which relies almost entirely on property tax revenue to fund core services.
Those services include:
county jails
sheriffs’ offices
road maintenance
emergency management
court operations
Without property tax revenue, counties would face major cuts unless the Legislature replaced the funding elsewhere.
The petition now moves into the signature-gathering phase.
