Why the Ninnekah property tax increase is happening

Property owners in Ninnekah will see a steep jump in their bills after the school district agreed to a $7.5 million settlement tied to abuse by former basketball coach Ronald Akins. The district covered $1.5 million already. The remaining balance will be spread across property owners over three years.

How the Ninnekah school lawsuit payout will be collected

  • Year 1: Property taxes rise ~75% to begin funding the obligation.

  • Years 2–3: Additional but smaller increases finish the payout schedule.

  • Why now: Oklahoma districts can levy ad valorem assessments to satisfy court-ordered judgments when insurance and reserves are insufficient.

Parents and taxpayers say the spike is painful amid higher costs, but many also want stronger hiring, reporting, and oversight standards to prevent future harm.
