OU Athletic Department Financial Loss Reaches $47 Million After SEC Transition
The OU athletic department financial loss totaled nearly $47 million during fiscal year 2025, a shortfall university officials say was anticipated as the Sooners completed their move to the Southeastern Conference.
According to the University of Oklahoma Athletic Department, the loss stems primarily from the timing of OU’s entry into the SEC. Because the university did not join the conference at the beginning of the fiscal year, OU did not receive a full-year conference revenue distribution.
OU athletic department financial loss tied to conference timing
Conference distributions account for a major portion of athletic department revenue, including media rights, postseason payouts, and shared league income. Financial disclosures from the NCAA show SEC member schools receive significantly higher annual distributions than most other conferences.
OU officials say the one-time loss reflects a transition year rather than ongoing financial instability.
University expects recovery with full SEC revenue
Athletic department leaders say the deficit is expected to be offset in future years now that OU qualifies for full annual SEC revenue shares. The university says long-term projections show increased stability and growth under the SEC’s media contracts.
