Opposition Grows Over Proposed Oklahoma City ICE Detention Facility

A proposed Oklahoma City ICE detention facility is facing growing opposition as community leaders and lawmakers raise concerns about its location and scale.

Plans call for a 1,500-bed ICE detention facility to be housed in an empty warehouse measuring more than 400,000 square feet in Oklahoma City. The proposed site is located within two miles of public schools, prompting concern from nearby residents.

State Senator Cari Hicks is urging Oklahomans to speak out against the facility, citing due process concerns and potential community impacts.

Oklahoma City ICE detention facility draws scrutiny

Opponents say the Oklahoma City ICE detention facility would significantly expand immigration detention capacity in the state. There are currently three ICE detention centers in Oklahoma, with reported plans for additional facilities in Guthrie and Tulsa.

Some county jails also hold contracts to house ICE detainees, according to data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Concerns center on oversight and location

Advocates argue that placing a large detention center near schools raises safety and transparency issues. Immigration policy groups say detention expansion should be carefully reviewed with community input.

Supporters of the project have not publicly detailed operational plans, fueling calls for greater oversight before any approvals move forward.
