Oklahoma Weather Pattern Brings Rain And Flooding Concerns Statewide
An active Oklahoma weather pattern is stretching across the entire state today as southwestern Oklahoma faces the greatest flooding concerns while central and eastern areas prepare for additional rounds of rain later this week.
According to the National Weather Service, widespread severe weather outbreaks are not expected statewide, but repeated rounds of thunderstorms could still produce heavy rainfall, lightning, gusty winds, and isolated small hail through the weekend.
The evolving Oklahoma weather pattern is being driven by an upper-level disturbance moving through the Southern Plains, keeping humid and unstable conditions locked across much of the region.
Forecasters say southwestern Oklahoma currently faces the highest flooding risk today.
Oklahoma Weather Pattern Impacting Regions Differently
The latest Oklahoma weather pattern is creating sharply different conditions depending on location across the state.
Region | Conditions | Temperatures |
Oklahoma Panhandle | Partly cloudy and mild | Mid-80s |
North & Eastern Oklahoma | Mostly sunny and pleasant | 83° to 85° |
Southwest Oklahoma & Texoma | Heavy rain and thunderstorms | Low 80s and humid |
According to the National Weather Service Norman Forecast Office, southwestern Oklahoma began seeing thunderstorm activity early Tuesday morning with additional waves of rain expected throughout the day.
Meteorologists warn that repeated rounds of rainfall may lead to localized street flooding and isolated flash flooding concerns in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, cities like Oklahoma City and Tulsa are currently experiencing calmer daytime conditions with mixed clouds and sunshine.
Scattered afternoon thunderstorms remain possible across central and eastern Oklahoma, though the strongest rain bands are expected later tonight and Wednesday.
Wednesday Expected To Bring Widespread Rain Across Oklahoma
Forecasters say Wednesday currently appears to be the wettest period within the ongoing Oklahoma weather pattern.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a broad wave of rain and thunderstorms is expected to spread directly across Oklahoma beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing into Wednesday night.
Cloud cover and rainfall are expected to hold daytime highs mainly in the mid-70s statewide.
While organized tornado outbreaks are not anticipated, forecasters continue monitoring localized heavy rainfall and isolated stronger storms capable of producing gusty winds and lightning.
Oklahoma Weather Pattern Remains Active Through Weekend
The unsettled Oklahoma weather pattern is expected to continue through at least Friday before gradually transitioning into a more isolated summertime setup this weekend.
Thursday will likely continue bringing scattered rain and thunderstorm chances statewide, especially across eastern Oklahoma where heavier rainfall may linger longer.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, rain chances should gradually begin decreasing across western Oklahoma later Thursday and Friday.
Temperatures are then expected to rebound into the mid-to-upper 80s statewide heading into the weekend.
Meteorologists say Oklahoma will likely settle into a classic late-May weather pattern featuring humid afternoons and isolated pop-up evening thunderstorms moving forward.
