Cold Temperatures Pose Serious Risks to Pets

Veterinarians across Oklahoma are urging pet owners to take precautions as cold weather settles in, warning that animals can suffer serious injuries when exposed to low temperatures for extended periods.

According to veterinarians, hypothermia and frostbite are the most common cold-weather injuries treated during winter months, particularly among pets left outdoors or exposed to harsh conditions without adequate shelter.

Steps Pet Owners Can Take to Protect Animals

Veterinarians recommend keeping pets indoors whenever possible, especially during freezing temperatures. When outdoor trips are necessary, exposure should be limited and supervised.

Pet owners are encouraged to wipe paws after walks to remove ice, snow, and road salt, which can irritate skin or be toxic if ingested. Checking paws for cracks, redness, or injuries is also advised.

Vehicles and Ice Melt Pose Additional Dangers

Veterinarians stress that pets should never be left unattended in cold vehicles, where temperatures can drop rapidly. Officials also recommend using pet-friendly ice melt products, as standard de-icers can be harmful to animals.

Experts say the best rule of thumb is simple: if it’s too cold for people to stay outside comfortably, it’s too cold for pets.
